How to Make Authentic Sadza
- Maize meal (2 cups)
- Water (4 cups)
- Medium-sized pot
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring cup
- Whisk
Step-by-Step Instructions
Measure 2 cups of maize meal and 4 cups of water. Set them aside where you can easily reach them when cooking.
- Ensure your maize meal is finely ground for a smooth texture.
Pour 3 cups of water into a medium-sized pot and bring it to a boil over medium heat.
- Use a medium-sized pot to prevent splattering.
- Watch the pot to prevent the water from boiling over.
While the water is heating, mix the remaining 1 cup of water with 1 cup of maize meal in a separate bowl to form a smooth slurry.
- Use a whisk to prevent lumps.
Once the water is boiling, slowly pour in the maize meal slurry, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens.
- Stir continuously to avoid lumps.
Reduce the heat to low. Gradually add the remaining maize meal, stirring continuously. Cook until the sadza is thick and pulls away from the sides of the pot, about 10 minutes.
Test the texture and consistency of the sadza. It should be thick but smooth. Adjust with a little maize meal or water if necessary.
Remove the pot from heat and let it sit for a minute. Then, scoop the sadza into individual servings and serve hot with your favorite relish or stew.
- Wet your hands with cold water for easy handling when scooping.
- Use fresh maize meal for the best flavor and texture.
- Keep stirring to avoid lumps.
- Be careful when adding the slurry to boiling water to avoid splashes.
- The hot sadza can cause burns, handle with care.
