How to Create Breakout Rooms in Microsoft Teams
- Computer with internet access
- Microsoft Teams account
- Latest version of Microsoft Teams app or web version
Step-by-Step Instructions
Launch the Microsoft Teams application on your computer or access the web version through your preferred internet browser.
- Ensure you have the latest version of the app installed for the best experience.
To create breakout rooms, you need to be a meeting organizer. Start a new meeting or schedule one through the 'Calendar' tab, selecting your preferred date, time, and participants.
- You can use the 'Meet Now' option for an immediate meeting, or 'New Meeting' for a scheduled one.
Once your meeting is set to begin, join as the organizer. Only organizers can create breakout rooms.
- Ensure a stable internet connection before joining.
In the meeting controls, find the 'Breakout Rooms' button. It looks like an icon with four squares.
- This button will only appear if you are the meeting organizer.
Click the 'Breakout Rooms' button. You'll be prompted to set the number of rooms needed and assign participants either automatically or manually.
- Automatic assignment divides participants evenly among rooms, while manual gives you direct control.
After configuration, click 'Create Rooms'. Then select 'Open Rooms' to activate them, moving participants into their respective breakout rooms.
Monitor and participate in different breakout rooms if necessary. You can close all rooms or send messages to all rooms when needed.
- Ensure participants know how to request help if needed during their breakout session.
- Test the breakout room feature in a practice session before an important meeting.
- Make sure all participants have a stable internet connection to prevent disconnection during breakout sessions.
